Early 20th Century Development
In the early 1900s, a vision emerged to develop a resort community along the Gulf Coast’s natural beauty. The Grayton Beach community was formally platted in the 1910s by land developers attracted to the region’s unspoiled beaches and temperate climate.
The town grew slowly but steadily, with families building cottages and establishing a close-knit beach culture centered around fishing, boating, and relaxation.
Mid-Century Challenges
The community faced hardships including:
- The Great Depression, which slowed development
- Hurricanes that damaged homes and infrastructure
- Limited access roads and utilities
Yet the residents persevered, maintaining the area's natural charm.

Conservation Movement
By the 1960s, increasing development pressure threatened the fragile coastal ecosystems. Concerned citizens and environmentalists advocated for preservation of the area’s dunes, lakes, and beaches.
The Florida Park Service recognized the unique natural values and worked to protect the land.
Establishment of the Park
In 1968, Grayton Beach State Park was officially established, protecting over 2,000 acres of coastal habitat, including Western Lake and miles of Gulf shoreline.
The park’s creation marked a commitment to safeguarding the ecological integrity and recreational opportunities of this rare coastal environment. shutdown123
